In early 2024, we set out with a mission: bring 100% cotton socks to market. 

Prior to this, we could not easily find any socks that were 100% cotton. All the products listed on major retail sites would often be titled as “100% cotton” but scrolling down to the details would be buried the fact that it was only partially cotton. The rest was always polyester.

The next step was to seek out a manufacturer. But all the available options were overseas. We contacted numerous Chinese manufacturers but were given the same response over and over: “You cannot make socks that are 100% cotton! It’s impossible!” That answer was, by common sense, ridiculous. After all, synthetic fibers were mostly invented in the 1940s. So there must have been a way socks were made prior to that.

We researched the history of sock-making and discovered the traditional processes. This led to one particular piece of machinery: the circular sock machine. 

The circular sock machine is a design that has been around for over 100 years. A hand-cranked machine that was popular during the Great Depression for women to make socks. An entire cottage industry was formed of women making socks at home with these machines.

To our surprise, these machines are still made to this day, right here in the USA, using the same traditional design. We immediately acquired one and began learning the trade of sock making.

We launched our new brand under the name Cotedge, a name we still retain today in our Cotedge Classic Line of 100% cotton socks. 

Fast-forward to 2026. We rebranded as Cotone Sock Studio and introduced a whole new design of socks made with 100% Pima Cotton: The vintage Cotone Crew sock.

This new design debuted with 10 styles in 5 different color options. Still made one at a time, in the traditional way, on our hand-cranked sock machine.

It has been a privilege to bring back this time-honored tradition of skilled craftsmanship for a whole new audience.
